Through our different initiatives, we have engaged more than 700 youths in Uganda’s Tourism space
Facts about Uganda
Uganda is a landlocked country within East Africa, covering an area of 241,038 square kilometers with a human population of 45,905,417. Uganda’s border countries are South Sudan, Kenya, Tanzania, Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of Congo. Uganda experiences 2 peak wet and dry seasons. The latter runs from June through September and December to February. Wet seasons run from March to May and October, November. Rainfall can occur anytime of the year, which is ideal for diverse flora and fauna to flourish.
Uganda has a varied landscape that includes highlands, savannahs, open waters, wetlands, forests and others. Lake Victoria is the largest lake in the country, and is where the source of the Nile River is. The lake is also the largest tropical lake in the world while the Nile is the longest river in the world. One of the highest mountains in Africa, the Rwenzori ranges is found in Uganda. This has the highest point in the whole country, which is the Margherita peak at 5109 meters above sea level.

Top National Parks in Uganda
Uganda has 10 national parks, which are well known for sheltering biodiversity and other natural wonders. These include the following,
Bwindi National Park is famous for sheltering 459 mountain gorillas, almost a half of the total population on planet earth. Other attractions in this jungle include more primate species like vervet monkeys, black and white colobus monkeys, L’hoest’s monkeys, olive baboons etc. The surrounding communities include the Batwa, who were the former inhabitants in the forest. In Bwindi visitors can do gorilla trekking, birdwatching, nature walks and community visits etc.
This park offers stunning views of the Murchison Falls, where River Nile plunges through a narrow gorge. Murchison Falls National Park presents some of the most thrilling game drives to spot lions, elephants, giraffes, hippos and leopards etc. The park also features boat cruises on the Nile, birdwatching and beautiful savannah scenery. Photos and documentary filmmaking can be done here.
This park is known for pristine lakes including Mburo, beautiful savannah woodland scenery, rocky hills and abundant wildlife species. The latter include zebras, impalas, Uganda kobs, hippos and buffaloes. Activities to do in Lake Mburo National Park include game drives, boat rides, nature walks, horseback rides and birdwatching tours. In the communities surrounding the park exploring and milking the beautiful Ankole cows can be done.
This is Uganda’s most popular park and it boasts diverse habitats with vast savannahs, forest, wetlands and lakes. Lions, elephants, buffaloes, leopards, waterbucks, hippos and crocodiles etc. call Queen Elizabeth National Park home. Major activities available here daily include game drives, launch trips, chimpanzee tracking, lion tracking, leopard tracking and birdwatching etc.
Also known as the “Primate Capital of the World,” thanks to its huge population of chimps and other 12 primate species. Primates such as red-tailed monkeys, vervet monkeys, black and white colobus monkeys also shelter there. The ecosystem is composed of lush forests, grassland and wetlands. Chimpanzee trekking, birdwatching, day nature walks, night nature walks and chimpanzee habituation tours are done here.
This is the only place in Uganda where golden monkeys can be seen, along with mountain gorillas. Other major attractions in Mgahinga are wildlife like elephants and buffaloes, birds, and volcanoes, Sabyinyo, Gahinga and Muhabura. Gorilla tracking and golden monkey tracking are key activities to be done inside the forest. Meanwhile, birdwatching, Batwa trail, hiking tours are equally exciting activities to do here.
Mountains in Uganda
Uganda has numerous mountains that present opportunities for visitors to explore biodiversity, varied landscapes and unique cultures. Prominent peaks in Uganda include,
- Mount Rwenzori
This is a UNESCO World Heritage site also called the “Mountains of the Moon,” This has the highest point in Uganda, reaching 5,109 meters. Mount Rwenzori features snow-capped peaks, glaciers and a diverse range of alpine flora. The trekking routes are challenging however views of the unique biodiversity and scenery make the adventure worthwhile.
- Mount Elgon
This is an extinct volcanic mountain found on the border of Uganda and Kenya. Wagagai is the highest peak, offering captivating views and cool climate. Visitors at Mount Elgon also enjoy exploring caves, waterfalls and ancient elephant corridors. Birdwatching excursions and camping can be done here.
- Mount Muhabura
This is found in Mgahinga National Park and is among the 8 Virunga ranges. Mount. Muhabura stands at 4,127 meters with a conical shape. Muhabura lies on the Uganda-Rwanda border making it a strategic destination for hiking tours. This is because you can get lovely views of 2 countries at the same time, while at the summit. Gorillas can also be encountered here.
- Mount Sabyinyo
Also situated in Mgahinga National Park and the Virunga Conservation Area, Mount. Sabyinyo reaches 3,669 meters at its summit. Unlike Mount Muhabura, Sabyinyo has rugged and steep slopes. The name Sabyinyo implies “Old man’s teeth” since it is jagged at the summit. Gorilla trekking tours can also be done on this part of the park.
Explore the Islands in Kalangala
Kalangala’s lovely Ssese Islands archipelago comprise 84 of them in Lake Victoria. These are renowned for their stunning sand beaches, biodiversity and lush tropical forests. Major activities to do in Ssese Islands include boat trips, swimming, fishing, sand bathing, island hopping, birdwatching and community visits. John Speke’s Fort and delicious local cuisines are available in Ssese Islands to be explored and consumed respectively.
Explore Kampala/Entebbe City
Botanical Gardens, is situated in Entebbe and are primarily to showcase various indigenous as well as exotic plant species. Visitors also enjoy walking along beautiful pathways to view numerous birds, butterflies and primates. Botanical Gardens also offers refreshing atmosphere for picnicking.
Gadhafi National Mosque, currently known as the Uganda National Mosque, is an architectural marvel situated within Kampala city. Visitors are treated to captivating panoramic views of the city while they explore a center for Islamic faith and worship.
Buganda Kingdom Palace, is a cultural and historical site found in Kampala. This is the royal residence of the Kabaka (King of Buganda). This is one of the key sites where insight into Uganda’s rich cultural heritage and tradition can be got.
Namirembe Cathedral, which is arguably Uganda’s oldest Anglican cathedral and situated within Kampala. Visitors will honestly love seeing the unique architecture and stained glass windows while witnessing the peaceful atmosphere for worship and reflection.
Local Market-Nakasero, found in Kampala is a busy market that offers fresh produce, handicrafts and local foods for visitors. Besides offering one of the best local shopping experiences in Uganda, you will meet and interact with happy people and vendors.
African Craft Village, situated in Kampala to offer a wide range of souvenirs, paintings and fine art, showcasing Uganda’s unique cultures. Visitors can also find and purchase all kinds of Ugandan jewelry, t-shirts and Ankara clothing.
Uganda National Museum, which is situated in Kampala to display Uganda’s cultural history, wildlife exhibits, archaeological and paleontological artifacts. The museum is among the best sites for educational tours.
Bahaí Temple, in Kampala is a religious site of the Bahaí faith in Uganda. This is a continental worship place which offers an architectural marvel, tranquil gardens and panoramic views of Kampala city.
UWEC (Uganda Wildlife Education Center), is situated in Entebbe just at the shores of Lake Victoria. Rescued and rehabilitated wildlife species find shelter here and can be explored daily during daytime. Educational tours are offered for animals such as lions, chimps, zebras, ostriches etc.
Uganda’s Cultural and Historical Heritage
Uganda’s beauty goes beyond its natural wonders, the country is home to a rich tapestry of cultures and historical sites. People belong to at least 56 tribes and besides that they practice different cultures and traditions. This allows Uganda to enjoy a wide range of cuisines, music, languages and history. This encourages mutual respect, cultural exchange and unity in diversity. This is a significant boost to the citizen’s creativity and the country’s tourism.
Kasubi Tombs and Uganda Museum preserves Uganda’s royal and colonial history. They serve as significant reminders of the country’s past struggles and achievements. Mengo Palace is the Kabaka’s (King of Buganda) official residence. This is the political and cultural center of the Baganda. This is a place that has witnesses some major events including the 1966 Kabaka Crisis and the 1900 Buganda agreement. The latter was between the British government of the Uganda Protectorate and the Buganda Kingdom.
Toro Kingdom is found in Uganda’s western region with Fort Portal being its capital. This is led by the Omukama (King) who currently has a cultural and ceremonial role. This preserves Toro cultural heritage, royal regalia and others. Busoga Kingdom in eastern Uganda unites the Basoga under the leadership of the Kyabazinga. Also, there is the Bunyoro Kingdom in western Uganda. This is among the oldest and among the most powerful that was once a powerhouse in East Africa’s Great Lakes region.
The Nyero Rock Paintings in Paliisa district, eastern Uganda offer some of the most profound rock art in the country. They are painted red or white and local Iteso believe that these are sacred places for their gods These rock paintings date back to thousands of years and are now associated with Iteso people. Local community members offer money to the site specially to request or thank their ancestral spirits for help. This reflects the deep connection between the people and their ancestors. This expresses cultural believes passed down through generations.
Best time to visit Uganda
Come to Uganda during the dry season when the weather patterns are characterized as sunny and dry. These present ideal conditions for outdoor experiences like wildlife safaris, gorilla treks, hiking adventures and boat cruises. The dry season also offers clearer visibility of wildlife thanks to the less dense vegetation in nature sites. Additionally, it is much easier to access the national parks during this period due to drier roads. Typically, dry seasons tend to occur in Uganda during the months of June to September and December to February.
