Kaynela Farm Ltd

KAYNELA THROUGH THE EYES OF A CURIOUS TRAVELLER

Why through my eyes? Because I feel like no one seems to have seen Kaynela the way I am about to explain to you. The journey to Kaynela Farms Limited is a story on its own. Though on this trip, it was different from the usual drive. Instead, I used a boda boda to make our way through the lush sugarcane plantations that stretch endlessly along the road. Through villages where life moves simply, with families living in thatched huts and children running barefoot over the warm soil. You can’t help but feel the heartbeat of this place, and of the people who call it home.

Meals and eco-friendly stay

Upon arrival at Kaynela, I was warmly welcomed with a glass of freshly made mango juice. The kind of refreshment that awakens your senses and immediately sets a tone of care and hospitality. It was sweet, vibrant, and tangibly fresh, a taste that seemed to echo the life of the land itself. From there, lunch bumped in like an uninvited guest. And this is where I began to realize that at Kaynela, nothing is taken lightly, nothing is outsourced, nothing wasted.

Served fresh from the farm, the meal was a hearty introduction to local flavors. Matooke, garden greens, and other wholesome delicacies that make you feel nourished from the inside out. There was a sense of pride in the simplicity of the food. This was not just a meal, it was a celebration of the earth’s bounty, served directly to you with care.

After lunch, it was time to check into the eco-friendly accommodation. Here, sustainability is more than a concept. It is lived in every detail. Nothing plastic, nothing polythene, and every structure, furniture, and detail is handmade from wood, refined carefully. Often left in its natural shape to preserve its authenticity. The rooms themselves blend naturally with the environment, inviting calm, quiet, and reflection. The kind of space where you feel the air is cleaner, the wind softer. And time slows down, just enough to catch your breath.

Evening Bonfire

As the evening approached, the magic continued. Along with other guests, we gathered around a bonfire, under the vast open sky. Surrounded by the gentle sounds of nature. The menu for the night was an unforgettable display of flavors. Roasted chicken, fresh salads, tea, and drinks, while a projector played movies under the stars. The night air was cool, and the warmth of the fire, the food, and the shared space. Created a sense of comfort that is increasingly rare. It was a perfect blend of nature, simplicity, and hospitality, the kind of evening that makes you pause and just appreciate life.

A morning at Kaynela Farms Ltd

The following morning arrived very cold, so cold! In fact, leaving the cozy, warm bed felt like a challenge. But thankfully, Kaynela has water heaters, so a warm refresh was first on the agenda. Once revived, it was time for breakfast, fresh from the farm, enjoyed under a tree beside the swimming pool. The slow morning, the cool air, the surrounding greenery, and the occasional birdcall created a pace that almost demands you stop and breathe. Some mornings, it seems, are meant to be felt, not rushed.

Visionary leaders

At the heart of Kaynela are its visionary leaders, Mr. Faizo Rashid Serunjogi and Mrs. Peace Kayesu, whose names, along with those of their children, inspired the name Kaynela. This husband-and-wife team transformed a simple passion for farming into a thriving agro-tourism destination. One that balances adventure, sustainability, education, and comfort. Kaynela Farm Limited is a place where you are not only entertained but immersed in the art of farming, the rhythm of nature. And the care that goes into every decision made on the farm.

One of the first stops on my farm tour was their woodworking house. Here, I saw firsthand, the pieces of furniture, every utensil, and even the wall designs that were waiting to be completed. On-site from wood, often left in its natural form and only cleaned or refined to bring out its beauty. This is eco-tourism at its finest, an approach rarely seen elsewhere in the country. Everything at Kaynela is designed to coexist with nature, to be functional yet sustainable, and to show respect for every resource used.

The Farm, Animals, and Birds at Kaynela Farms Ltd

The farm itself is extensive and thriving. There are healthy dairy cows, whose care is meticulous, ensuring fresh milk daily. Donkeys are available for donkey riding, while horses, like the sassy Cookie who was pregnant, are ready for horse riding adventures. And yes, they even have camels, a rare sight in Uganda, for camel rides. These animals are not just attractions. They are cared for with respect and love, highlighting the ethics and responsibility that define the farm. About 4 crocodiles also live in the premises. They consume 30kg of meat. However, they eat only once a week, on Sundays. A very unique digestive system!

Kaynela Farm Ltd is also a bird lover’s haven. Chickens imported from Southeast Asia and Poland. Majestic ostriches, the largest birds in the world, and emus, the second largest. Peacocks, doves, and crested cranes all echo out cute songs in the mornings and evenings. And sweet quirks throughout the day. The farm is alive with avian diversity. The care given to these creatures, along with the cows, goats, and other animals, reflects a deep commitment to sustainability and life.

The farm also practices fish farming in fish ponds. They have healthy tilapia that are fun to watch while converging in one corner, fighting for food. They are fed with only 2kg of food at a time. Beyond that, fatality would hit. If it’s left uneaten and floats on water. It becomes ammonia hence killing the fish. This shows deep knowledge, thoughtfulness and great passion in Kaynela’s work.

Leftover food and farm residues are recycled as feed, ensuring nothing is wasted. The farm also boasts plantations of plantains, vegetables, onions among others. Grown for both consumption and sale. The meals served to guests are all prepared from produce harvested on-site. Completing a cycle of freshness, care, and eco-conscious living.

Ankole Cultural Experience

The cultural experience at Kaynela was equally enriching. I had the privilege of learning about the Ankole traditions, centered around milk and cattle. The traditional kitchen, Enju y’Ebyanzi, revealed a deep connection between food, culture, and community. Items like Ebishabo (for ghee), Ebyanzi (milk, also symbolic of a groom’s cows). Ekikoro for yorghurt (bongo), and Omugamba (to hang ebyanzi).

All tell stories of values, care, and heritage. Small ebyanzi, or enkongoro. Were traditionally given as gifts to brides, representing future children. Smoking these items was used not just for aroma, but as a natural preservative. Learning these customs was a window into the history, beauty, and meaning of Ankole life. And how these traditions continue to shape farming practices today.

Adventure and Activities at Kaynela Farms Ltd

Beyond culture, Kaynela offers adventure activities for visitors. Though I didn’t try them all, it is clear that there is something for everyone. Quad biking, go-karting, horse riding, donkey riding, camel riding, and a range of sports. Like soccer, basketball, netball, and tennis, all thoughtfully integrated into the farm without disturbing the natural environment.

A Legacy of Passion

What makes Kaynela truly remarkable is the blend of adventure, learning, and sustainability. All wrapped in a deep respect for the environment. The founders have built not just a farm or tourist destination, but a living legacy. A place that educates, entertains, and nourishes, while showing that eco-conscious design and agriculture can coexist beautifully with comfort and fun.

Personal Reflections about Kaynela Farms Ltd

In my time at Kaynela, I experienced nature, culture, and innovation in ways that felt authentic and personal. Every detail, from the warm welcome with mango juice to the eco-friendly rooms. From the farm animals to the vegetable gardens. And from cultural education to adventure activities. Reflects intention, care, and heart. It is clear that Kaynela is not just a destination. It is a statement about what is possible when passion meets purpose.

Kaynela is a place where eco-tourism, culture, adventure, and sustainability intersect. Where food, animals, and people are treated with respect. And where every visitor leaves with a deeper appreciation for the land, the founders, and the legacy they are building.

If there were a petition to include Kaynela among the only places in Uganda with Ostriches, alongside Kidepo and Pian Upe National Parks, I would be first to sign. Because this is more than a farm. It is a sanctuary, a school, and a playground, all in one.

In short, Kaynela Farms Ltd is a testament to what vision, passion, and care can achieve. It is a place I will remember not just for the sights, sounds, and tastes. But for the sustainability, the joy of adventure, and the depth of cultural heritage that the founders so thoughtfully nurture. Kaynela is more than a farm. It is life, learning, and legacy. Cultivated with hands, hearts, and hope.
